ENCUBRIMIENTOS
Alfredo Zapata’s project Encubrimientos focuses on examples of clutter found in his surroundings. Specifically, he explored groups of round hay bales. As a result of his process and research, a variety of pieces were created. These reflect on the order and chaos found in human behavior and the ways it alters society’s synthetic perception of itself.
The artist proposes that society has developed an identity that removes humans from the natural world. It is reflected on our structures, vehicles and other human manifestations. Disorganization inside these is categorized as unpleasant, creating dissonance with our natural instincts.

Ángulos 1 y 2 and Impedimento are examples of human’s contrasting behaviors of organizing their own disorganization. Encubrimientos translates to cover ups, which are used to avoid chaos. The use of plastic tarps as coverage is an example of the contrast created when trying to induce order and avoid manifestation.

The project utilizes sound to express the disorganization found in nature. Toldo crema, Toldo gris and Toldo negro are sound pieces that feature ambient sound recordings altered by a digital audio software. The artist recorded the ambient sound while standing on top of each plastic tarp covering the hay bales. He then suppressed the sound to be let out as rhythmic patterns. The artist’s intention is to organize nature’s chaotic sounds, reflecting once again on what he proposes to be society’s synthetic perception of itself.

Azul 1 and Azul 2 are presented as examples of tools created to reinforce order. Found near the hay bales, the artist captures the photograph to expose other ways organization is expressed. He establishes colors as examples of coverage, which he defines as an impediment for chaos.
